What "Sensory Processing" Actually Means
Every moment of every day, your child's brain is receiving and sorting information from their senses - not just the five you learned about in school, but also two less-talked-about ones: proprioception (the sense of where your body is and how much force it's using) and the vestibular sense (movement and balance). Sensory processing is simply how efficiently the brain organises all of that incoming information and turns it into an appropriate response. When that processing runs smoothly, we barely notice it. With Autism, and Without It
Sensory processing differences are well-documented in autistic children, but they are by no means exclusive to autism. Many children with ADHD, developmental delays, or no other diagnosis at all show significant sensory-seeking or sensory-avoiding patterns.
