Can a Therapist Actually Help Through a Screen?

It's a fair question, and one we'd rather answer honestly than oversell. A screen can't replace hands-on physical assessment, and there are things - certain sensory assessments, some gross motor and coordination work, very young children with limited attention for a video call - where being in the room with your child genuinely works better. What a screen does very well is guided, parent-supported intervention: coaching you through activities in your child's own home environment, observing behaviour in the setting where it actually happens (their real bedroom, their real dining table, their real toys), and building strategies you can put into practice immediately, without a commute. For a large share of what occupational therapy addresses - sensory strategies, self-care routines, play-based skill building, handwriting and fine motor practice, classroom-relevant organisation - online works genuinely well. Where it doesn't, we'll say so directly and route you toward an in-person visit at one of our three East Delhi centres instead.

Booking Your Session

You book through our online consultation page or by calling us directly at +91 93134 16228. Online consultations run between 9 AM and 1:30 PM, across India - you don't need to be anywhere near Delhi to access this.

Preparing for the Session

There's no special equipment required. A stable internet connection, a device with a camera (a phone is entirely fine), and a reasonably quiet space where your child can move a little are all that's genuinely needed. We'll typically ask you to have a few everyday items on hand - things already in your home, like a pencil, some toys your child already plays with, or a snack - rather than anything you need to purchase specially.

During the Session

For younger children or a first session, expect a good portion of the time to involve the therapist talking with you as the parent - understanding your child's history, your specific concerns, and what a typical day looks like - alongside observing your child, sometimes directly through the camera and sometimes through activities you're guided to try with them in real time. It's genuinely normal for a young child to be shy, distracted, or only partially engaged on camera; that doesn't derail the session, because parent-reported detail and behaviour are a real and useful part of the picture too.

After the Session: Follow-Up

You leave with specific, practical strategies to try at home before the next session - not vague general advice. Progress is reviewed at each follow-up, and the plan adjusts based on what's actually changing for your child, rather than running on a fixed script regardless of outcome.

Addressing the "No Equipment" Worry

This comes up often, and the honest answer is: you don't need specialised therapy equipment at home. Most of what's used in a session is adapted from ordinary household items and your child's existing toys, specifically because the goal is strategies you can realistically sustain day to day, not a shopping list.

A Recognised Model, Not an Experiment

Online delivery of occupational therapy isn't a workaround we've invented - it's a professionally recognised model internationally. The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) recognises telehealth as a legitimate mode of OT service delivery, alongside in-person care. That doesn't mean online suits every single situation equally well, and we'll always tell you plainly if we think an in-person visit would serve your child better - but it does mean you're not choosing an unproven substitute when you book online.

When In-Person Might Serve Your Child Better

If your child needs certain hands-on gross motor or coordination assessment, has very limited attention for screen-based interaction, or the concern is one that's genuinely easier to observe in person, we'll tell you honestly and offer a route to one of our three East Delhi centres - Shahdara, Rishabh Vihar & Karkardooma, or Gagan Vihar - rather than pushing an online session that isn't the right fit.

Who Online Consultation Tends to Suit Well

In practice, online works particularly well for school-age children working on sensory strategies, self-care routines, handwriting and organisation, and for families outside Delhi who would otherwise have no practical access to a specialist pediatric OT at all. It also suits parents who want to be closely involved in carrying strategies into daily life, since an online session naturally happens in the same home environment where those strategies then get used. For a toddler needing close physical handling during assessment, or a child who needs a hands-on evaluation of coordination and movement, we'll say so directly and suggest an in-person visit instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any special equipment for an online OT session?

No. A phone or laptop with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a few everyday household items or your child's existing toys are all that's needed.

My child won't sit still or focus on a video call. Will the session still be useful?

Yes. This is common, especially with younger children, and it doesn't derail the session - a significant part of an online consultation involves talking through your observations as a parent, alongside whatever direct interaction the child is comfortable with.

Is online occupational therapy actually as effective as in-person?

It depends on what's being addressed. For guided, parent-supported intervention - sensory strategies, self-care routines, handwriting, classroom-relevant skills - online works well and is a professionally recognised delivery model; WFOT recognises telehealth in OT internationally. For certain hands-on assessments, in-person is sometimes the better fit, and we'll tell you honestly when that's the case.

What are the online consultation timings?

Online consultations are available across India between 9 AM and 1:30 PM. In-person visits to our East Delhi centres run 10 AM to 7:30 PM.
